How to Increase Traffic to Your Website
There are several methods of getting traffic to your website. But, having built dozens of websites since 1998 and drawing traffic to them in almost every way imaginable, I've come to learn that to achieve long-term success you MUST rank well in the search engines. If you don't, any other form of traffic generation you use is temporary at best, and will result in the eventual death of your site, PPC (pay-per-click) advertising being perhaps the only exception.
But whereas PPC is only sustainable for as long as you have the money to pay for it, SEO is both less time consuming and more cost effective, not to mention it typically provides a higher quality of traffic.
So let's talk about how to get your website ranked with the search engines so you can start reigning in the traffic! Remember, traffic equals money on the internet. Traffic is what the world of making money online is all about. So let's get to it!
First, Optimize Each Webpage
The first step to getting ranked is to properly optimize each page. Doing so lets the search engines understand what your website is about so they can figure out how which keyword searches it should show up for.
For example, if your website is about oak furniture, then you probably want to have content that discusses oak furniture. There's a bit more to it than that, and you want to make sure you set things up correctly, otherwise you could end up not ever ranking for anything worthwhile! The quick video below explains how to setup each webpage and explains some of the theory behind the search engines.
Defining your website's relevance
Once you've optimized the content on your website, you've set the "relevancy." If you put up information about oak furniture and you've done it correctly, then the search engines will say, "Okay, this website is relevant to people looking for information about oak furniture." The next thing the search engines will do is apply a level of authority to it. The more authoritative your website is believed to be, the higher it will appear in the search engines for its relevant keyword terms.
The way authority is built is through backlinks. That is, links from other relevant websites to yours. Next, we learn how to quickly start building backlinks and, thus, authority to your website.
